On the Fence

A Community Art Project

 

My concept design for this project came from discussions with members of my Calgary neighbourhood of Canyon Meadows.  As a section of road had been identified as needing traffic calming measures in response to speed concerns, the creation of visual movement on the fence above the boulevard was achieved by the placement of paintings arranged in arcs to suggest undulating lines.  This served two purposes, first to remind drivers that people who care about their neighbourhood live here and second an opportunity for neighbours to work together and get to know each other. 

 

I facilitated the painting of 365 wooden discs by community groups (Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders), elementary and junior high school students and community members.  More community members added to the project by responding to the question of "What does the word Community Mean to You?" and by working on the artwork installation.

 

As I run into my neighbours in my community it is easier for us to continue conversations that we started during this project.  I am also able to initiate conversations with others as I see them looking at the paintings or talking about the project.  I hope a greater sense of ownership and pride in this community we call home has been built on because of this project.
